Think first. Then let the coach push you further.
Most AI tools hand you an answer. Think First asks for your reasoning first, so the coach's explanation lands on thinking you have already done.

Did you never observe how imitations, beginning in early youth and continuing far into life, at length grow into habits and become a second nature, affecting body and voice and mind? Then we will not allow those for whom we profess a care, and of whom we say that they ought to be good men, to imitate characters unworthy of them. And therefore our guardians, setting aside every other business, are to dedicate themselves wholly to the maintenance of freedom in the State, making this their craft, and engaging in no work which does not bear on this end.

How a Think First session works
- 01
Select text
Pick a sentence or passage from a book, article, report or your own notes.
- 02
Think First
The coach asks one question about that passage. You answer in your own words before anything is explained.
- 03
Coach feedback
You see your thinking next to the author's: what you got right, what is missing, and how the author reasons.
- 04
Let’s test your thinking
A new situation where the same idea applies. You decide what you would do and say why.
- 05
Thinking Profile
Your answers add evidence to the five thinking lenses, so you can see what your thinking is getting stronger at.
Why explaining first works
Reading an explanation can make an idea feel familiar, but familiarity is not the same as understanding. When you explain an idea in your own words, you actively engage with what you are learning, uncover gaps in your knowledge and question your assumptions.
The AI coach then challenges your reasoning and helps you refine it. Think First helps you learn actively, understand more deeply and develop stronger independent thinking.
What the coach does, and what it leaves to you
Responds to your actual answer
Feedback names what you got right and the single most important thing missing, rather than a generic model answer.
Grounds the explanation in the text
The author's reasoning is explained from the passage you selected, with short quotes where they help.
Never writes your answer for you
The thinking stays yours. The coach asks, responds and challenges; you do the reasoning.
Help when you are stuck
Ask for a visual hint to see the shape of an idea without being given the answer, or speak your first thought instead of typing it. A rough first attempt is enough to start.
Questions people ask
Is Think First just a quiz?
No. There is no single right answer to memorise. The question asks you to reason about a passage, and the coach responds to what you actually wrote.
Does the coach ever give the answer?
Yes, after you have answered. Once you share your thinking, the coach explains the author's reasoning next to yours so you can see what you caught and what you missed.
Can I use my own text?
Yes. Paste a passage from a book, article, report or your notes, or bring a whole book or PDF into the ilmVault reader and select text as you read.
Can I try it without an account?
Yes. The demo on the ilmVault home page runs a full Think First session on a sample passage or on text you paste.
